Weller v. City of Urbana
The Fight for Freedom
What This Means for Our Community & Nation’s Future
1st Amendment - Freedom of Speech
5th Amendment - Due Process
14th Amendment - Equal Protection
Urbana Tomorrow and Justin T. Weller have filed a lawsuit in the Federal District Court against the City of Urbana, alleging systemic abuse of power and violating constitutional rights like freedom of speech and equal protection while obstructing progress.
This lawsuit stems from years of negative actions taken by city officials and other bad actors, including interference with business development projects, destruction of property and criminal charges against Weller that were later overturned in court.
The case aims to hold the local government accountable and restore freedom in Urbana.
Weller is a community advocate, entrepreneur, and the founder of the Urbana Youth Center (UYC) and Urbana Tomorrow.
In 2019, he ran for mayor on a platform focused on youth programs and reducing government waste. After narrowly losing the election, he dedicated himself to improving Urbana by opening UYC, which has since provided essential resources and opportunities for local youth.
Despite resistance from city officials, Weller has remained committed to fostering positive change in the community.
For more than five years, Urbana Tomorrow and Weller believe Urbana’s leadership has obstructed progress, infringed on constitutional rights and selectively enforced policies to hinder community-driven initiatives.
“We believe this coordinated effort continues to stand in the way of progress. The consequences of these officials' actions, in our opinion, harms children, damages local businesses and threatens the freedom of all citizens,” said Weller.

Beyond Weller’s personal battle, this case has the potential to bring about freedom and justice for the children of Urbana, property owners and the many citizens similar to Weller who are part of the LGBTQ+ community.
The ultimate goal is to ensure that politics never again stand in the way of doing what's right for children and rehabilitating blighted properties. It seeks to prevent future city improvement efforts from being stifled by injustice or retaliation—creating a path forward rooted in freedom and justice for all.
